About the Event

As many of you might be aware, it's been particularly rainy recently and the forecast is predicting that this will continue for the rest of this week and then some. I don't think smacklings particularly fancy spending hours in the humidity or getting soaked by the rain, so the EOS event is being postponed to Sunday, December 5th ! Sorry for the late notice and any inconveniences this may have caused.

Instead, for those who'd still like to spend some time with other smacklings, we will try and have a comfy movie screening at UQ (time and movie tbd) this Saturday. Hope to see you there <3

Hello smacklings,

The end of semester event will be an opportunity for you to get together and unwind by the pool with fellow smack members. You may bring your own food, or chip in $10 to access lunch that SMACK will provide; we’ll be bringing homemade sandwiches, wraps, slices, cakes, biscuits and some things that can be cooked at the Southbank BBQ areas. To make sure we make all the right things, please get in touch with an exec about any special dietary requirements.

Since we’re going to be chilling in a public space, there is no cap on how many people can come to lunch and payments will be made on the day, but filling out the expression form below will give us a good estimate of how many food items we need to buy/make, so do fill it out if you’re interested in having the food SMACK will be providing.

Why not the normal dinner?

A few people have already said that they're not sure why we can't just do the normal EOS dinner, and we're sure plenty of other people are thinking the same thing. So here's a bit of an explanation as to why we've changed things.

Previously EOS has been a buffet dinner of either hotpot at Shabuhouse, or KBBQ at Hanwoori. This event is, to put it bluntly, very expensive. SMACK subsidises $5 per person, and it still costs $35 to go on top of that. It's not like this is a crazy amount of money, but it's nothing to sneeze at - for context, that's a bit more than 3 bento boxes from Miko's Bento. Last EOS the total bill paid by members and the club was just over $1800. We're not opposed to spending money on members, or hosting expensive events, but for what you actually get we're not too sure this is good value for anyone. Due to the nature of EOS as a sit-down dinner in a relatively tight space, you don't really have the opportunity to socialise with anyone other than the people sitting close to you, and even that can be kind of difficult depending on the volume. We understand that it's got a different vibe to regular dinners, but in a lot of ways it's very similar to a normal SMACK dinner, but with different food and a buffet system - not to mention that the event itself has gotten stale for a lot of people. We're also effectively locked to those two places, because finding somewhere that will cater for 50+ patrons at once is not an easy task!

The idea behind a pool day was to try something that's cheaper, more social, and more accessible. Pool EOS is entirely free - you are more than welcome to come along and either buy or bring your own food. We're charging $10 only if you want to join in on sausages, sandwiches, snacks, etc. As it's a social event you're free to bounce between groups, chat to more people, and just generally mingle a lot more than a traditional EOS lets you. Finally, it's over a long period during the day. If you have commitments you can pop in and out, and if you want to stay the whole day and do karaoke afterwards that's fine too. A lot of people have spoken about how they want events that are easier for them to access and get home from afterwards, and this is us trying to deliver on that.

Obviously this is all still a trial. We're keeping sem 1 EOS dinner (who wants to go swimming in the middle of winter?), and this isn't set in stone as the new sem 2 EOS. We'll be checking to see how it goes this EOS, so we hope to see you there!
